When you’re in an official race event, one of the hardest challenge is how to pose for the photographers. You’re in beast mode with game-face on and maybe chasing a PR time, then a photographer pops up in front of you and you only have mere seconds to come up with an instagram-worthy pose, it’s probably a runner’s instinct when most would then pull off a pose with a signature “hand gesture.”
After viewing thousands and thousands of running photos (a very important part of running career) for years, these are the TOP HAND GESTURES executed by runners in their photos:
Photos are from:

1. PEACE SIGN. Seriously, why do we, runners, do that PEACE sign? Maybe it’s a peace sign to our warring selves inside of us: the self that wants to quit already and the self who won’t quit the race.

Because you’re no basic runner…
Lowered

High-ered. To add more variety to your Peace Sign.
2. THUMBS-UP. Or facebook LIKE button in real life. I guess this is our way of saying “Thank you” to the photographers, or maybe it’s telling your friends who would come across your photo to “LIKE” it.
It’s a variety to thumbs-up that looks like you’re going to get an NBI clearance. =)

3. SHAKA or CALL ME… MAYBE
I honestly do not know what do runners mean when they do this hand sign on photos. Do they want to hang loose or wish they’re surfing? Or they don’t have celphone load so call them… maybe? (popcorn)
4. ISA PA… ISA PANG CHICKEN JOY
For those generation who did not know the Jollibee Chicken Joy commercial of Aga Mulach and Serena Dalrimple, you can read about it here >>.
This looks like too many pieces of chicken joy!
5. OK… OKAY
You really like that hand sign? K. Are you okay? K.
6. PRAISE & WORSHIP
I don’t mean to offend any religious / spiritual ritual, but this kind of hand-raising also happens a lot in runners’ photos.
7. HEY, YOU!
That point your finger which is kind of pointless but then so is running a (half-)marathon.
9. BANG BANG
If there’s peace sign, runners also love this gun hand sign.
10. TRAFFIC ENFORCER
The runners who look like they’re signalling to stop the traffic.
11. OPPA / HEART
These runners probably watch too much Korean dramas. =)
12. THIS FACE
I don’t know how you call this hand gesture but this is probably how runners acknowledge and share the gift of beauty.
13. MAKIBAKA… FLEX IT!
When runners are “na-strong.”
14. NO-HAND GESTURE
Sometimes, the face value says it all… =)
Now you have 10+ more hand gestures to unnecessarily spice up your running photos! =) You’re welcome!
