A boat-ride away from CDO is Camiguin Island, which no longer requires an introduction as it’s really a very popular tourist destination. Camiguin Island also has been also becoming a go-to destination for runners and triathletes. And, we can say that one of the main people behind it is a multi-sports athlete (triathlon, duathlon, running), Engr. Ira Bermudo (IB). He is very active in organizing and promoting their fiesta fun runs, duathlons / triathlons on top of a busy job as a professional electronics engineer. This year, he is the Race Director / founder of the island’s first ultaramthon Camiguin 360 (March 29, 2015). (Check this race story of a barefoot runner of Camiguin 360 2014 here >>.)
And, he will be coming again to MAPAWA Trail Run, being an avid supporter of local races. Let’s get to a bit more of Ira Bermudo, his events, Camiguin Island, and learn a few tips from him in the following Q&A:
Runroo: How did you start running, duathlon, and triathlon?
IR: During my high school days I represented Camiguin in regional sports meets for high, long and triple jumps. I also play basketball until my college days. I run once in a while until being hooked to running few years ago when my classmate, from my masteral degree on IT, introduced me to fun runs in CDO. I started in 5k until I was able to finish full marathon.
As to duathlon and triathlon, I just did swimming and biking as for my cross training. Although, I’ve been a mountainbiker for many years already. When the municipality of Mahinog in Camiguin organized Triathlon sometimes in 2012 (or 2013), that’s when the beginning of my SwimBikeRun community involvement.
Runroo: Camiguin Runners is one of the popular group in Camiguin. Can you share with us how did your group started?
IR: The group started with a couple bucket of beer, but now the group seldom drink anymore. After running sessions, we opt eating over drinking beer. LOL!
Runroo: Aside from being a participant of races, you are also very active in organizing races in Camiguin. Can you please share with us the races you organized?
I’ve been part of the Lanzones Festival Run for three years now. It is sponsored by the provincial government of Camiguin.
IR: Our group, Promote CAMGN, Inc, had the first flag off of the Camiguin 360 (64k UltraMarathon), which I’m more largely involved in it as being the Race Director. Hopefully, it will be an annual event in Camiguin which every one can look forward to. We’re scheduling it to happen every Palm Sunday of the year. So the next edition is scheduled on March 29, 2015 at 12:01AM.
Runroo: Organizing races is definitely a daunting task on top of your work, what made you decide or inspire you to organize racing events?
IR: Besides introducing a healthy lifestyle to my fellow Camiguin. It is also my little way of helping the tourism industry of Camiguin through sports.
Runroo: What sporting events in Camiguin Island that you can recommend?
IR: Of course, it is the Camiguin360. Hopefully, we can also have an annual triathlon event, which our group envision to launch someday.
Runroo: Please share with us your favorite running ground in Camiguin Island?
IR: I’m lucky to be living in a beautiful island that any where can be a running ground from road, to trails, and we also have decent oval track.
Runroo: You’ve been joining different races, from fun runs to ultramarathons and triathlons, around Philippines. What are your top favorite races?
Cebu City Marathon. Tabuelan 111. TNF 100, which I still have an unfinished business. Mapawa Trail Run!
Runroo: So you’ll be back in the R.O.X. MAPAWA Trail Run, how do you prepare for it?
As for my R.O.X. MAPAWA Trail Run preparation, I have my daily regular runs, add uphill and downhill workout, and lotssss of squat. Mentally relax!
Cut-off time must be out of mind to savor the view and the beauty of the trail! 🙂
Runroo: What’s going to be your gear set-up for the MAPAWA Trail Run?
Besides the mandatory gear requirement, I must go light. Then I’ll pack some dried fruits for trail food, and honey for my energy.
