“Forget about pace and do what feels good.”

This is the tip given by Dax R. Ang of THE EVEREST OUTDOORS – EVENTS on how to best survive the upcoming R.O.X. MAPAWA TRAIL RUN this Oct. 26, 2014. Their outdoor event firm is the Technical Race Management Team of this year’s R.O.X. MAPAWA Trail Run, and he is taking the role of Race Technical Director.

And, so let’s get to know more about the race, their outdoor adventure events firm, and about him in the following Q&A (question and answer) of Dax Ang (DRA).

Runroo: What’s your oldest memory of outdoor adventure?

DRA: I have always been climbing mountains. Every time I would climb Mt. Apo (90’s), it seemed to always feel like it’s a new experience though I’ve been there for so many times already. So I could say that my oldest memory is of the feeling of “newness” that Mt. Apo gave me.

Runroo: How did you get into becoming an Outdoor Adventure Consultant?

It all started during the 90’s when hobby became work, and work is now a passion. Together with my partner Pastor Emata of The Everest Outdoors – Events, we are motivated to pursue this profession to show to the people a different real outdoor experience which is not also putting our nature / outdoor in harm of destruction.

Before outdoor was like my escape from the daily grind, but, now, the outdoor is my office.

Runroo: Who are the people behind the The Everest Outdoors – Events?

DRA: We are only 2, I and Erwin “Pastor” Emata, whom I met also back in the early 1990’s. We were competing in a mountain marathon held in Iligan City where I was a runner up and he bagged the championship title.

From then on, we became best of friends.

Runroo: How did The Everest Outdoor – Events started and created?

DRA: After my best friend (Erwin “Pastor” Emata) conquered Mount Everest last 2006, we had a brief talk about creating and promoting outdoor adventure activities, primarily trail running in the Philippines.

Pastor and I thought that it’s time to give back to the outdoor, which has given so much joy to us, by providing effective and creative adventure sports tourism service management. We want to showcase the outdoor without destroying it, but at the same time without losing the “thrill” part for the people to experience.

The more people love outdoors, the more it’s appreciated, the greater the chances that it will be taken cared of, and so more generations can enjoy it.

Runroo: Under The Everest Outdoor – Events, what are the top 3 races you managed that you find most meaningful?

The North Face Thrill of the Trail, Bohol (2010).
Columbia Recyclable Regatta, Cebu (2012)
ROX Explorac Trail Run, Porac, Pampanga (2013)

(Editor’s note: They have upcoming TNF Mountain Trail Challenge, this Aug. 24, 2014 in Davao City. More details here >>.)

Runroo: Aside from creating / designing races, what are some races you had joined? Which were the toughest?

The North Face 100 Trail Run, Baguio City, Philippines in 2013 was the toughest for me. I also joined the Barclays Moontrekker Trail Run in Mui Wu, Lantau Hong Kong in 2013.

Runroo: What is the main role of Team Everest Outdoor in the race in the upcoming ROX MAPAWA Trail Marathon?

DAR: We were invited to be their TECHNICAL RACE MANAGEMENT TEAM. Specifically, I am the Race Technical Director, while Pastor is the Race Director.

Runroo: What is the challenge of having to take over an already popular race?

DAR: The previous editions were already challenging and exciting so mainly the challenge is how to make it more adventurous. So we really need to dig deeper, be more creative in finding routes in the perimeters of MAPAWA Park.

Runroo: For those who joined the the previous MAPAWA Trail Runs, what changes are they going to experience in this year’s edition?

The 90% of the route this year are new and offering steeper hills. The tracks this year will require more side-to-side movement, and lots of natural obstacle to deal with.

Runroo: Any tips to survive ROX MAPAWA Trail Run directed by Team Everest Outdoor?

DAR: Forget about pace and do what feels good
