Timothy Abellana, a triathlete of Team IronDad, is our next featured athlete who has an inspiring story of being from a spectator to becoming an ironman. Get to know him in the following brief Q&A:

“Endure the pain, Enjoy the finish”

Runroo: What is your fondest memory you have in Sacred Heart School?

I would say it had to be the boy scout camping activity we had in Lahug. Living in the city all my life, it was a breath of fresh air to be roughing it in the camp with fellow scouts.

Runroo: Let’s talk about triathlon. How did you get into triathlon?

My interest in the sport started around 2012 when I decided to go to the North Reclamation area and catch a glimpse of the bike leg of IM70.3. Seeing these guys gut it out thru 1.9 KM of swimming, 90.0 KM of biking, and 21.1 KM of running put me in sheer awe of the challenge they decided to go through and the joy they must have felt to just finish.

Runroo: Which discipline you are most confident, and which discipline you feel you need to improve most?

Although I am not that fast, I am most confident in the aspect of running as this was my base sport prior to Triathlon. Swimming would be my weakest of the three disciplines.

Runroo: How do you manage training and doing business?

I just have a simple time management via effective scheduling of the day’s activities.

Runroo: What does your typical weekly training schedule look like?

Mondays and Fridays are usually set for an hour or two on the bike trainers. Tuesdays and Thursdays for swimming and short run sessions. Wednesdays are rest days and weekends are usually reserved for long runs, bike rides or tri simulations.

Runroo: What is the biggest race you are preparing this year?

IM70.3 this coming August.

Runroo: Now the most important question — what’s your bike setup?

Vellum uno race frameset
Shimano 105 5700 groupset
Rotor Q Rings 53/39 130 BCD crankset
Generic carbon basebar with integrated aerobar
Cane Creek brake levers and shimano dura ace shifters
Generic 55mm carbon tubular rims on the front and 88mm on the rear both with continental gatorskin 700c x 22 tires
Shimano Ultegra 6700 11-28 cogs
