A new name came up as champion of the successful first leg of Cebu Ultrarunners Club’s Adik – ug Dagan University Ultramarathon (photos here >>) series, while Cebuano mountainbiker Nino Surban returned to Japan with a much better performance over one UCI-sanctioned event as runner-turned triathlete Philip Duenas claims another award in a race he joined outside Cebu while the rest of the Cebuano triathletes, cyclists and runners had a good time in their own events here over the weekend.

In ultra-running, Jeboy Magbologtong (Danao City Milers) was all-smiles as he beaten the Hardcore 100-Mile winner Brian Lou Guillen (Team ADR) in the Adik Ug Dagan ultramarathon from Danao to Sogod and back.

Magbologtong finished the in 11 hours, 19 minutes and 21 seconds, way ahead of Guillen who ended second in 12:13:23 while Feljoy Canada Feljoy landed third in 12:39:42.

Rounding up the top 10 cast in the 100-km action were Froilan Roy Roble(12:53:49), Richard Tabucal(13:31:38), Sergio Escarinas II(13:40:36), Ranie Kiamco(13:43:27), Nino Riche Buot (13:49:00), Joerick Bontigao(13:52:39) and Patrick Earl Manulat with 13:54:34.

In the distaff side, Rhoda Oporto utilized experience to get the crown over the ever-daring Jade Abellana.

Oporto finished in 13:18:15 as against Abellana’s 13:26:11 while Mary Luz Shimizu was third in her 14:20:38 clocking.

In the 50-km action, it was Enrique Mangas who ruled the battle while the girls’ side saw Era Villacorta on top.

Mangas won in 4:37:12 followed by Philip Ramos with 05:07:17 but the most surprising of which was the third place honors taken away by Voltaire Montebon.

The football player-turned ultra-runner Montebon finished his first ultramarathon in 05:11:50,something that surprised most of the local ultra-running folllowers and his friends.

In the girls’ side, Villacorta logged 05:41:15 followed by Jovelyn Roca with 06:16:13 and Levi Glaiza Pono at third place with 06:42:17.

From 20th last year, Surban zoomed to 10th place in the UCI-sanctioned 2014 J Yawatahama International Cross-country Race in Japan.

Surban posted 1:50:20.79 on a 33.60-kilometer race among elite riders mostly from powerhouse Japan.

Surban was the only non-Japanese national who made it to the top 10 cast out of 70 riders.

After the said event, Surban is set to join another competition in Japan before heading back home for the Asean Mountainbike Cup on June 13 to 15 in Danao City.

Defy 123 Triathlon

John Philip Duenas also improved his ranking from fifth to second overall in the Defy 123 Triathlon at Bellevue in Bohol.

Duenas who came out seventh in the 1-kilometer open water action, Duenas continued to pounce on the 110-km bike until he was able to narrow the gap against the early leaders of the race

Duenas used his speed on running posting the best run split at 44 minutes on a 12-km action enroute to finishing second overall behind foreign triathlete Michael Murphy.

Since 2012, Duenas owned the best run spit award including that of the 2012 and 2013 Cobra Energy Drink Ironman 70.3 Philippines, the 2013 5i50 Century Tuna Tri and the 5i50 Safeguard Tri.

SikaRun – Sikad Dagan sa Liloan

Back in Cebu, Warren Vinan finally got back on top via the Sika-Run or Sikad-Dagan Sa Lilo-an 2014.

After all the runner-up finishes in his races earlier, Vinan won the elite open division over the returning Elmo Clarabal while Michael Largo ended third.

Tengoy Colmenares won the master’s category while Joevane Villarico got the senior division and Alex Donray Noval in the junior division.

Mereeis Ramirez also joined the event and paired with Francis Fernando for the relay.They won the action against four other teams.

Prior to Vinan’s reign in Liloan, Bonifacio Monjas ruled the premiere 10-km trail run under the Sika–Run.

The self-supporting Monjas outsmarted Kenyans for the top spot.

A day after, Monjas also ruled in another trail run in Matalom for a back-to-back victory.

In swimming, Team Narwhal and Talisay City Swim Team etched itself as the first overall champions in their respective categories in the 1st Mayor Jonas Cortes Swimming Invitational Meet 2014 at Sacred Heart School-Ateneo Cebu in Mandaue City.

Narwhal ruled the novice division with 474 points as against Talisay City with 341 points.

Narwhal got most of their points in the boys’ division with 311 while their female counterparts had 163 points.

Talisay, on the other hand, garnered 799 points total to dominate the age-group.They were followed by host Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu with 464 points and Maria Montesori international School at third spot with 405 points.

Cebu Narwhal and Talisay also got several awards with their best coming out the best in their classes.

Most Outstanding swimmers from Narwhal includes Mike Dela Cerna, Lance Tacsaga,Jherbie Albina and Zurielle Galo.

Talisay, for their part, had Marielle Estreba, Ravin Faith Alcoseba, and Camille Shane Pacabis, John Philip Kong, Psalm Aquino,Kyle Villaflor, and Kim Andrew Remolino reigning their respective categories.

Other most outstanding swimmer awardees in this seventh Mayor’s Cup edition and the first under Mayor Cortes’ name were Sacred Heart School-Hijas de Jesus’ Althea Mataragnon, SHS-AdC’s Johann Matthew Tubesa and Nyza Archival, were MMIS’Juliet Sedeno, St.Theresa’s College’s Justin Garrido, UB Rocket’s Andre Valencia, Alexangrei Gallego, and Jaspe Jovy and Surigao’s Xans Purtollano.
