Our featured biker is a familiar personality in the running community as a barefoot ultra runner. He’s a member of the TAD (Toledo Adik sa Dagan), one of the home of the most talented runners in Cebu. But this time, let’s know more about another adventure side of him where he wanders in the trails of Cebu, not on barefoot, but on top a bike!

Name: Danilo L. Enrique II
Rank (age): 30
Serial number (kind of bike): Hardtail Trail Mountain Bike

Name of your team? Brief history?

My team is called C.E.B.U., which stands for Cebu Extreme Bikers Union. I’ve been riding with the group for about 2 years now. But until now I’m still an applicant. Hehehe. The group is composed of men and wonen, and most of them are aged between late 30s to early 60s. So I’m the youngest in the group.

Our weekly ride is every Saturday morning. We usually rent a PUJ going to our 1st trail in that way we can save our energy. But it’s been awhile now since I’ve ridden with the group because I now work on Saturdays.

How long have you been biking? How did you get into biking?

I’ve been riding my mountain bike for about 3 years now. But this would be my fourth bike. The 1st one I had was when I was 4 years old which was a 3-wheeled bike for kids. The 2nd was when I was in 5th grade which was a BMX. And, the 3rd bike was when I was 2nd year high school, which was a cheap y frame full suspension bike. Hehe. So I can say I’ve been riding a bike since childhood.

Will the Enduro ta ‘Bai be your first mountain bike race? If not, how long have you been doing mountain bike racing?

The coming Enduro ‘ta Bai will be my 3rd solo bike race.

My first MTB race was a downhill race in San Carlos Heights (Cebu) in 2012. The second one was the Asturias downhill race, also in 2012. Other events which included a bike ride was Xterra Tri lite 2012, Bogo Duathlon 2012, and Liloan Duathlon 2012.

So 2012 is my 1st bike race year.

How do you train for it?

I train during my spare time. I am recently enjoying the bike track of Canso X in my backyard in Balamban, Cebu. I’m currently working in Balamban so it’s easier for me to access Canso X.

Where are your playgrounds? The most challenging trail in Cebu you can recommend? Your favorite?

The most challenging route for me would be Roosevelt. The trail starts near Mountain View in Busay, and ends in Guadalupe. I would not recommend it for beginners though.

But my favorite trail is d Kan-irag trail. It’s really easy so you can go as fast as you can.

Now, to that all important bike porn question – what’s your bike setup?

My bike is a Jamis Trail x2. It’s a hardtail with an extended handle bar and 2.5 tires at the front, and 2.0 tires at the back; basic group set but with mechanical disc breaks, 80mm travel only.

I don’t believe in expensive parts. It’s not the bike. It’s the biker. I only replace what needs to be replaced.

If there’d be an apocalypse, and you can only save one bike, which among your bikes will you save?

Right now, I also have a Japanese surplus bike and a road bike frame. Should an apocalypse arrive, and I would only be able to save one bike, I would choose my MTB. Because it would also be functional during life or death situations such as an apocalypse. Heheheh
